Wesfarmers Resources makes safety conversations part of day to day life at work
To deliver a step change in its safety culture, Curragh introduced the ’Safety Interaction’ program to managers and supervisors in early 2013. This trained supervisors to have regular targeted discussions with employees on the subject of safety, to reinforce site safety standards and procedures, and then to record the ‘safety interaction’ formally.
In July 2013 the safety interaction program training was rolled out to the whole workforce including long term contract partners, so any employee or contractor could initiate a ‘safety interaction’. It was found that focusing on discussions, rather than audits, encourages greater ownership of safety from the floor up and creates a culture where crew members will challenge each other on safety issues.
The program has been successful with a clear correlation between the increase in safety interactions and the decrease in injuries, as illustrated in the graph below.
From July 2013 to June 2014 over 35,000 safety interactions were recorded and the Total Recordable Injury Frequency Rate (TRIFR) was reduced from 14.8 to 5.0.
