Wesfarmers Resources recognised for gender programs
Curragh’s ‘Women in Resources’ program is a multi-faceted strategy aimed at improving the traditional mining industry gender imbalance at all levels at Curragh. It involves a mentoring program, targeted recruitment campaigns for specific positions, talent management and accelerated development for high potential women.
This program was a finalist in the Queensland Resources Council’s Resources Awards for Women and received a silver Wesfarmers Limited Innovation Award.
The strong leadership support of this program within Curragh was recognised externally, when Craig McCabe, General Manager Curragh mine, was named the QRC’s Gender Diversity Champion for 2014. This is a prestigious award recognising outstanding leadership in cultivating, supporting and promoting diversity in the resources sector. When receiving the award, he stressed that the industry could not afford to maintain its tradition of a male dominated workforce.
“If half of the population believe our industry isn’t attractive then we will not have the technical and leadership talent we need to remain globally competitive in the future,” Craig said.
Over the past two years, Wesfarmers Resources has made some progress towards improving the traditional gender imbalance in mining, with overall female participation increasing by 4.2 percent and the number of women occupying leadership positions increasing by 9.6 percent.
